彫刻と私Sculpture and I

小樽にアトリエを構え、具象彫刻を中心に制作。
素材は、木、陶土、石粉粘土、布、漆喰、石膏などを用いる。
モデルを用いた塑像も好きだが
近年は北海道内での出会いで得た木材を使い、
種類や質を選ばず、その性質をたずねながらほぼ無計画に直彫りする。

途中で現れたもの節や割れ、虫喰いのあとなども素材の一つとして参加してもらっている。
自然からなる美しさを発見し、感じながら、残しながら
手数はだんだんと少なくなってきた。
作りこみすぎたら躊躇なく絶ってみる。
そうすると新しいものが現れ驚かされる。
自然に起きることは必然だと感じ、その先はもう手を付ける必要がなくなる気がして道具を置く。

With my studio established in Otaru, I produce works with a focus on figurative sculpture.
The materials I work with include wood, china clay, stone-powder clay, cloth, shikkui (Japanese lime plaster), and gypsum plaster.
Although I also like clay figures made utilizing a model, in recent years I've been using wood I've gained through chance encounters within Hokkaidō.
Rather than picking out a type or quality, I ask the material itself what is it's nature, and as I learn from it, work largely without plans, direct carving.

Then along the way, things that appear - knots and cracks, or the scars of boring insects - these too participate, as another one of my materials.
Discovering a beauty comprised only of nature, as I feel, as I let be, I've come overtime to fuss less and less with the work. If it becomes too manufactured, without hesitation I slash something off.
And then something new appears, and surprises me.
These things that occur naturally, I take to be inevitable, and feeling no need to meddle about further, from there just lay my tools down.
